It could be hedge bindweed or calystegia sepium.

Indeed, I Google-imaged it, and it is as you say! Thanks! My friend is a gardener; I showed her one of my photos once, a photo of an unknown flower. She didn’t know the name, but was so determined to learn it she put down her gardening work and rushed off to the library, even then couldn’t find the name, so went to visit one of her friends, a horticulturalist, who was able to help her out, and she rushed back with such enthusiasm to tell me!
